How to Purchase a Garage in Three Steps
You made the decision to purchase a garage, congratulations! But now what? How does the process of getting the garage of your dreams work? We are here to help! Below are the top three things to consider as you proceed with the purchase of your garage.
Step 1
Secure Financing
Some people can pay cash upfront for large property investments like home renovations and garage builds. Others need to secure outside financing options to make a project possible. The first place we recommend talking to is your bank. Frequently, being a member of a specific bank chain can come with benefits, like lower interest rates or quick approval processes. Things like a home equity line of credit could also be considered to further invest in your home through a flexible line of credit. Whatever you do, you’ll want to budget appropriately. While pricing varies based on several factors, it is safe to budget anywhere from $30,000 – $50,000 for a new garage build.
Step 2
Consider the Specifications of your Garage…and Timing!
Once you know you want a garage and you are starting to work through your finances, do your research on garage building companies. Consider the specifications of your garage. Do you need an attached garage or a detached garage? Will you need to fit multiple vehicles in the garage? Perhaps you need space for storage or work, etc.? Start building a Wishlist that you can use to narrow your search. Check out our list of common garage building influences, here.
You’ll also want to keep in mind that the industry, especially since the recent COVID-19 pandemic, is experiencing an influx in demand for garage build and remodels. A higher volume of people are investing in the place they spend the most time: their home. This could mean finding a few companies that you are happy with as you start discussing specifications of your garage, timeline, and pricing. This will also help you get a competitive rate as you can compare each company’s quote. The most important thing to consider with timing is flexibility. Peak season for garage building is from April through October. If you are just starting to consider building a new garage, it is quite possible that it will not happen until the following year, strictly because of timing. So be realistic as you start to collect quotes and lay out your project timeline.
Step 3
Connect with a Garage Expert
While websites and reviews of past customers can be very useful, we highly encourage you to connect with a Garage Expert directly. They will be able to answer any design questions, make recommendations for your neighborhood, and home style, and even help clarify some details about the timeline and process. Having these direct conversations can lead to a better understanding of the total cost and project work involved.
