Smart Home Automation and How it Applies to Your Garage

For many, garages are a common way to store big-ticket items, like cars or lawnmowers. It can also be a big security risk if left open. With smart home automation, you’ll not only protect these items, but you’ll also have greater peace of mind that your home property is safe. Here’s how.

What is Smart Home Automation?

Smart home automation gives you the ability to automatically control electronic devices from your home. They are connected to the Internet, giving them the ability to be controlled remotely via an app or voice assistant. When it comes to automating your garage, you can either integrate a smart door opener, motion sensors for lights, a security camera, and more to monitor who comes and goes. That way if something does go “bump in the night”, instead of going all the way out to the garage to inspect what’s going on, you simply press a button on your mobile device or talk to a virtual assistant.

Step 1: Install and Automate Your Smart Garage

The first step is finding the right smart garage product to match your needs. The majority of the options on the market can provide automation to your existing garage door motor via a mobile app. Set up is a fairly straightforward process; simply connect the control box to your door motor and follow the manual instructions. From there, connect the smart garage to your home Wi-Fi network and download the smartphone app. Once it’s paired successfully, you can check the status of the door from the app anytime, anywhere. You can even close the door from the app if you happen to leave it open and schedule designated open and closing times.

Step 2: Keep Things Safe with Smart Home Hubs

Although you don’t need one, you can integrate a voice-activated smart hub into the other smart device network you just installed. These smart hubs have wireless IP cameras that can help you remotely monitor and record things that happen in your garage. From such, you can get alerts if the door opens or if the lights turn on. To successfully integrate, simply pair the smart garage app with your smart home hub and configure what you want it to do.

Step 3: Additional Smart Technology

Want to level up your security even more? Consider adding smart lights, geofencing, or a home alarm system to get even more monitoring capabilities. They all detect movement and provide alerts when triggered. You can also add geo-services to notify you when someone left without closing the garage or integrate unique individual user codes to allow access to the garage at specific times. The options are endless!

By installing a smart home automation system for your garage, you’ll not only prevent break-ins, theft, and keep your family safe, but you’ll also have an added sense of security and peace of mind. That makes it all worth it in our eyes.
